Stanley Kubrick

Stanley Kubrick was an American film director and producer who is generally considered one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers of his generation.

Filmography:
Fear and Desire (1953)
Killer's Kiss (1955)
The Killing (1956)
Paths of Glory (1957)
Spartacus (1960)
Lolita (1962)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Barry Lyndon (1975)
The Shining (1980)
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

I’ve seen a few Kubrick films such as “Paths of Glory”, “The Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange” without realising he directed them. However after looking at this filmography I can see a connection between the films. Kubrick is one filmmaker who has expanded his filmography over four and a half decades, and created a consistent theme and style.

Kubrick was known as a very stylistic filmmaker. His use of music remains prominent, he used music to evoke feelings and create tension and confusion. The two most prominent examples of the power of music occur in “A Clockwork Orange”, and “2001: A Space Odyssey”.
Along with a distinctive style, Kubrick films tend to have some very definitive themes. One of the most prominent themes is the- always male- protagonist. In conventional filmmaking, the protagonist tends to be the good guy. In Kubrick’s films, however, the main characters tend not to be conventionally likeable. Throughout the film Kubrick tries to gain empathy for these miscreants of society. Two solid examples of this are Alex in “A Clockwork Orange” and William in “Eyes Wide Shut”.
